Gunmen opened fire at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park Saturday night, killing 10 people and injuring at least 10, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The shooting, one of the worst in recent memory in California, took place at about 10:22 p.m. on the 100th block of West Garvey Avenue, Sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Meyer said Sunday morning. , told reporters.

Little information is available about the suspect, who is male and still on the run. There is no known motive or description of the shooter.

“When officers arrived on the scene, they observed a large number of individuals, patrons, pouring out of the place and screaming. ” said Mayer.

Firefighters declared 10 of the victims dead at the scene, Meyer said. At least 10 people have been taken to a number of local hospitals, where his condition ranges from stable to critical.

Law enforcement was dispatched to the scene Sunday morning at the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studios on the 100 block of South Garfield Avenue in the Alhambra. It was not clear whether police activity at the location was the same as Meyer referred to.

Seung Won Choi, who owns a seafood barbecue restaurant on Garvey Road across from where the shooting took place, said three people rushed to his restaurant and told him to lock the door.

They said there was a man with a semi-automatic gun in the area.

Wong Wei, who lives nearby, said his friend went to a dance club with some friends that night. His friend was in the bathroom when filming began.

A friend of his told him the shooter had a long gun and appeared to be firing indiscriminately.

“They don’t know why, so they run away,” he said.

The shooting occurred near the location of the Chinese New Year celebration. Tens of thousands of people turned out on Saturday for the start of the two-day festival, his one of the largest Lunar New Year events in the region.

Earlier in the day, crowds were enjoying skewers, Chinese food and jewelry shopping.

John, 27, who declined to give his last name, lives near the shooting site. He returned home around 10:00 pm and heard four or five gunshots. He went downstairs around 11:20 p.m. to see if the shooting took place at the New Year’s festivities.

“My first concern was knowing they were having a Lunar New Year celebration,” he said. But he said he saw the festival already cleared up for the day he arrived. He went to the scene of the shooting and saw one person on a stretcher. The other had his arm bandaged.

Videos on social media showed police and fire brigade crowding the Garvey Avenue area and treating victims.

The injured were taken to several hospitals in the area.

The violence stunned many in the area.

Edwin Chen, 47, drove from Woodland Hills to Monterey Park around 12:30 am after hearing the news. Chen said he grew up in the area and has more than a dozen of his relatives and friends living there.

He said he was saddened that this happened at a time when the community was celebrating Chinese New Year.

With a population of 61,000, Monterey Park in the San Gabriel Valley is majority Asian American. This suburb east of Los Angeles is 65% Asian American, 27% Latino, and 6% white, according to Census data.

One of the San Gabriel Valley’s central suburbs, Monterey Park is a hub for Asian-American supermarkets and restaurants.

Monterey Park’s two-day Lunar New Year festival was due to end on Sunday. However, that day’s event was canceled “out of due diligence and respect for the victims,” ​​said Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wease.

The Monterey Park shooting is one of the worst in modern Los Angeles County history. One of the last mass shootings of this magnitude occurred on Christmas Eve 2008, when a man dressed as Santa Claus broke into Covina’s home with his five handguns. Nine people died in the shooting, including the man’s ex-wife and her parents. The shooter died hours after the shooting.
