Tom became increasingly controlling and physically abusive towards Bell, and then gaslighted her into believing her version of events was false.

Earlier this week, Belle was enraged after Tom deliberately stopped them from celebrating the anniversary of Belle’s mother Lisa’s death, shoving him down in front of shocked villagers.

In tonight’s episode, Belle retreated and apologised for what had happened, but Tom continued his abuse by secretly tampering with her medication and making her think she hadn’t been taking it properly.

Bell quickly began to doubt himself and mentally health To Tom’s dismay, a breakdown meant the crisis team was called in.

Bell’s relatives forced him out of the house, against his good sense, so he could speak to a crisis team alone. Bell admitted how confused and lost he felt.

She said, “I don’t trust myself. I thought I was on medication. I mean, it’s one-on-one, right? Stick to a routine.”

“But I thought I was doing great, and I felt like I had everything under control, and now it’s like… everything I thought wasn’t true.”

Tom then insists on returning to the house with Kane, Marlon and Lydia to see what is going on.

But when they arrived, Bell answered the door with an overnight bag and a mental health adviser told them she was being admitted to a crisis assessment centre.

Although upset, Tom said that it was “what Bell needs most right now,” but Bell continued to insist that it was the right thing to do.

He reluctantly said goodbye to his wife, and Bell hugged everyone before getting into the passenger seat of the car and leaving the village.

As Tom appeared confused by his new situation, Emmerdale viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to discuss his recent behaviour and Belle’s exit.

One person wrote: “The look on Tom’s face! He wasn’t expecting that! Hopefully while Belle is in for a check up they do a blood test and find out she was on medication.”

Another added: “Tom has lost his punching bag. If they are away for too long she will tell them. Goodbye Tom!”

A third tweeted:
