Gasquet goes back a few years and wins the ATP title

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Veteran Richard Gasquet is on track to face Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the Australian Open and has shown that he is not overwhelmed.

The 36-year-old Frenchman capped off the year with a stunning finish beating second-seeded British No. 1 Cameron Norrie 4-6 6-4 6-4 in Saturday’s ASB Classic final.

It was the 67th-ranked Gasquet’s 17th title on the ATP Tour, but it was his first since 2018 and made him the oldest men’s champion in Auckland.

In his 20-year career, he has reached the fourth round of the Australian Open four times, and this was 10 years ago.

Norry, who plays in the city where he grew up, was chasing a seven-game winning streak, but Gasquet pulled him off when he led 4-1 in the third set.

Gasquet will face a heavy clash in the first round against young compatriot Hugo Humbert at Melbourne Park, but if he wins, he will likely face top local hopeful Kyrgios for the 19th seed.
