Welsh rugby legend Barry John, who died on February 4 this year, left behind a legacy worth £134,000.

Nicknamed King, he retired aged just 27 after a glittering career that saw him play for Cardiff, Wales and the British Lions.

John, 79, will leave a legacy of £100 each to his 11 grandchildren, with the remainder of his estate to be shared between his children Kate O’Cock, Lucy Powell, Anna Graham and David John. I left a will on the page.

He passed away at the University Hospital of Wales surrounded by his family, including his wife Janet.

The couple married in 1969 and had four children, but later separated.

John describes himself as “the first rugby pop star, superstar, whatever you want to call it”, and was ranked third on the BBC Sports Personality list behind Princess Anne and George Best, appearing on the TV show This Is Your Life. He also appeared in ‘.

But he said he couldn’t handle the fame and spotlight and retired from the sport he loved.

The Lions paid tribute to John on their official website, saying:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the great Barry John at the age of 79.

“Barry was an inspiration to many and will forever be remembered for how much he gave to the sport.”

He also praised his contribution to the game at Cardiff, where he spent most of his club career after joining from Llanelli.

Their statement read: “We are absolutely devastated to hear of Barry John’s passing.

“One of the greatest players to ever lead the Blue and Black, he shared a great partnership with Sir Gareth. He was an absolute icon and will be sorely missed.”
